To look at Western painted art through the centuries and find out what makes the painting great. We discuss different aspects of art, with examples chosen by the group members. Women artists, the art of Germany and the use of colour as a symbolic or emotional element are recent examples.

The Hudson River School of Landscape Painting
The group looked at the rise of the Hudson River School of Landscape painting in North America in the middle of the 19th century. We looked at the immense detail they managed to include in their artworks to give a picture which showed man at harmony with nature. We much appreciated seeing these artworks from artists who are not household names in the UK.
Portraiture
The group looked at the history of portraiture from Roman times to the present day and how it had evolved. Members of the group gave presentations on Jacques Louis David and Renoir. A video was shown on the life and works of Leonardo da Vinci, one of a series The Great Artists given by Tim Marlow.
